Finding enjoyable activities in sober living environments can be a great way to build connections and have fun without the influence of substances. Here are six games that can help foster camaraderie, laughter, and positive experiences among residents.

1. Board Games

Classic board games like Settlers of Catan, Monopoly, or Scrabble are perfect for group play. They encourage strategic thinking and teamwork while providing a fun and engaging way to pass the time. If you really want to find a new hobby and explore the power of your brain that you suppressed all those years with alcohol and drugs, check out GO, Chess and/or Magic the Gathering.

2. Card Games

Card games such as Uno, Spades, or Rummy can be played with a small or large group, making them versatile options. They promote social interaction and can be easily adapted to suit different skill levels. Games like Pokemon GO are also picking up a lot of steam lately and with them come a whole world of entertainment, excitement and social events that is a great way to fill some of that downtime you're sure to have early on.

3. Charades

Don't laugh, Charades is making a major come back in 2026 as people turn to ways to unplug from their screens and share time with friends in person more and more. A classic party game, Charades requires no special equipment and can be played anywhere. It encourages creativity and teamwork as players act out words or phrases without speaking, making it a hilarious way to bond.

4. Mafia

This entry gets a bit more detail and focus, it's that amazing. Also, it's not inherently known how to play like the previous mentions. SO here's a break down on Mafia:

How to Play
Setup: A group of 7+ players chooses a moderator who does not play but runs the game.

The moderator assigns secret roles: a few players are Mafia, and the rest are Villagers. Special roles like a Detective (who can investigate players at night) and a Doctor (who can save a player from being killed) can be added.

Night Phase: The moderator instructs all players to close their eyes. The Mafia secretly open their eyes and silently agree on a player to eliminate. The Detective may then open their eyes to investigate a player, and the Doctor opens their eyes to choose someone to save.
Day Phase: Everyone opens their eyes. The moderator announces who (if anyone) was killed. All surviving players discuss and debate to figure out who the Mafia members are.

Voting: Players vote to eliminate one suspect. The player with the most votes is eliminated and reveals their role.
Repeat: The game alternates between night and day phases.

Winning Conditions

  • The Mafia win if they eliminate enough Villagers so that their numbers are equal to or greater than the Villagers.

  • The Villagers win if they successfully eliminate all the Mafia members.

5. Trivia Night

Another one making a major come back in 2026, Trivia Night. Organizing a Sober Trivia Night can be a fantastic way to engage everyone. Also, check out if there are any sober trivia nights at any cafes or restaurants locally first. Participants can form teams and compete to answer questions on various topics, from pop culture to history. This not only entertains but also encourages learning and collaboration.

6. Outdoor Games

If you have access to outdoor space, consider playing games like Frisbee or Disk Golf, Capture the Flag, or Kickball. These games promote physical activity and teamwork, making them ideal for improving both physical and mental well-being.

Incorporating these games into sober living can enhance the community experience, providing residents with a sense of belonging and enjoyment. Remember, the key is to have fun and support each other in the journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
