Frequently asked questions
It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion for recovery. We pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail. Our approach is rooted in privacy and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to excellence.
How do I join a sober living home?
Joining a sober living home usually starts with finding a house that fits your needs, whether it’s gender-specific, pet-friendly, or focused on 12-Step recovery. Then you’ll reach out to the manager or intake coordinator, and complete a brief interview to confirm you’re serious about sobriety and to determine if our program is a good fit for you. If not, we are happy to help you with local resources and information to find the perfect fit for your needs. Once accepted, you’ll meet the house manager, review the rules, and begin settling into a structured, supportive environment built around accountability and daily recovery habits.
What is the difference between sober living and rehab?
Rehab is a structured clinical program focused on detox and early recovery, usually offering medical supervision and therapy in a controlled environment. Sober living, on the other hand, provides a more independent setting for people transitioning back into everyday life after treatment. It focuses on accountability, peer support, and structure while allowing residents to work, attend meetings, and rebuild routines in a stable, substance-free environment.
Do sober living homes do random drug testing?
Yes, most sober living homes drug test residents regularly to maintain accountability and a safe environment. Testing schedules vary by house, but many perform random or weekly screenings to ensure residents stay substance-free. These tests help build trust and reinforce recovery habits among everyone in the program.
Can I continue to work while living at your sober living residence?
Yes, you can continue working while at our sober living facility. Many programs offer this option, but not all, depending on the house’s rules and schedule flexibility. At The Commons Recovery, many residents maintain employment outside the home, as long as they adhere to curfews, meetings, and other program requirements.
Do I need to finish rehab before moving into sober living?
No, you don’t need to finish rehab before moving into our sober living. You can choose to do both, just one, or either, depending on your needs. If you participate in one of our addiction treatment programs, we also offer transportation to and from your sober living home.
Can I have visitations with my family and/or spouse?
Absolutely, staying connected with your family or spouse is an important part of the recovery process, and we prioritize maintaining those relationships while you’re in our sober living program. Residents are encouraged to have regular communication with loved ones through phone calls, video chats, and in-person visitations. Once a resident reaches Level One in the program, which usually occurs around two to three weeks after moving in, they become eligible for home passes. These home passes are structured opportunities to spend time with family or significant others in a supportive and accountable way, reinforcing the progress made in the program while maintaining healthy boundaries.
